When to Change out Winter Tires, According to The Pros

Visit Our Bozeman or Helena Shop to Prepare Your Car for Summer

We get asked when to change out winter tires frequently. We often fire back with an 'it depends!' Winter tires should be changed out as the season changes—the trick? Seasonal changes happen at slightly different times throughout the years. Furthermore, different locations defrost at different rates—Helena drivers will need to change tires at a different time than Bozeman drivers. It’s on you to use your best judgment.

With that in mind, if driving conditions have been clear for two or three weeks and no temperature drops are in the forecast—there's a good chance that it's time to change out your winter tires!

After all, you don't want snowless roads to eat through the rubber compounds in your snow tires. A preventable tire repair, if a repair is possible, is the last thing you need.

When to Change Out Studded Tires
According to the Montana Department of Transportation, studded tires are permitted between October 1st and May 31st.

We know that May seems far away. However, we can assure you—it’s not! Once you factor in scheduling and making your appointment at our Bozeman or Helena tire change location, that time goes by in a flash. So, we would advocate getting your studded tires switched out as soon as you no longer need them.

A proactive approach to scheduling your winter tire change out will help your studded tires last longer, it will protect the roads, and it will keep you out of trouble!

Scheduling Your Summer to Winter Tire Switch
When scheduling a winter to summer tire change, it's essential to give yourself lead time. If you're thinking about changing your tires, the rest of Bozeman and Helena are too! We'll always try to fit you in as fast as we can, but it’s a good idea to expect a wait of a week at the very least.

If you’re asking yourself when to change out your winter tires, that time might be now. To schedule your winter tire change out, reach out to us on our contact page or over the phone to set up a tire service.
